Stearic acid is often derived from palm oil, which is something some people want to avoid. Soy wax is the one that comes next in line for stearic content.
Then there is Kokum butter, Illipe butter, Shea butter, Cocoa butter, and beef
tallow.

Using combined Lye in the ratio 6:4 NaOH and KOH will result in a softer soap, but is not a beginner recipe.
